Novelist David Shaffer's first novel, Paid in Full, was named as one of five runners up in the genre fiction category of the Writer’s Digest International Self Published Book Awards contest for 2005. It was Shaffer’s first book in a mystery series featuring charismatic private investigator, Harry Caine. The novel takes Harry Caine from Florida to California where he resolves two murders and breaks up a counterfeiting operation before returning to his live-aboard boat in Florida.

Shaffer's second novel in the Harry Caine Mystery series is set in West Palm Beach and is titled Burned. Protagonist Harry Caine solves a bizarre series of crimes centered around the perpetrator’s slow burning hate motivated by an act of simple greed committed forty years earlier. Shaffer’s third and fourth novel in the Harry Caine Mystery Series, Dead Right and Wake-up Call, were set, respectfully, in North Carolina and South Florida. Dead Right was inspired by a true event that occurred in Kernersville fifteen years ago.
